Getting in the Spirit

I've always been a fan of Christmas. Of course, when you are little the presents and anticipation of Santa Claus seemed like the most important part of the season. But as I've grown older, I've appreciated the simpleness of it all. I love the decorations, the lights, the traditions. The family, the friends, the baking, the Christmas goodies. I've always thought it a magical time and still do. There is literally something in the air and I can't wrap my arms around it.
I have to admit, Christmas reminds me of family traditions that are no longer here. I absolutely miss spending Christmas Eve with my mom's parents (who have now passed on). Going to Christmas Eve service and spending time with my grandparents, silly Uncle, and cousins are forever memories. But these are the memories - moments in time - that make me want to pass similar traditions on to my children.
Other memories include home-made stockings by my Grandma Hertzler. She literally handcrafts these beautiful stockings for each and every one of her grand babies and -now- great grand babies (notice we have four this year)!! ;)

And I would never forget all of the memories with my sisters and brother. Staying up late at night, anticipating Rudolph's red nose outside of our window, telling silly stories and singing carols, making static (that's for you Justin & Lynsey), and waking up really early to find what Santa brought us! My parents have always made Christmas such a special time for us. We are so fortunate to still be able to spend time together as a family.
Of course, the birth of Christ and all the important characters who play a major role in this story is the absolute best part of Christmas. It is the true reason of the season. The true meaning of Christmas. Baby Jesus was the best gift given to us and this is why we give gifts ourselves. No, no gift will ever be as selfless and beautiful as the birth of Christ but as long as we remember the importance of the season, I find giving gifts to be self-sacrificing as well. And being able to share this story with my son melts my heart. He can already start to understand where it all began...
We couldn't leave out decorating Brode Bear's room... he, too, has lights that literally "light" up his little face every time we turn them on. Having a baby of my own makes the feeling of Christmas all the more special. I can almost feel the kid in myself once again and it brings a smile to my face.

Now, that I've shared some of my decorations, stories, and traditions with you, I hope you too will get in the SPIRIT this year. Enjoy the holidays, everyone!

Okay, I love the candles in the fireplace. I would have never thought about doing that, but I think I will. Ours is so ugly inside and we don't use it.

Also, I love your nativity. I have the same one, but I don't have the stars yet. I think I may have to go buy them. I think it completes the set.

I love your decorations. You are so good. I need to have you closer so you can help me.

Just like you helped me learn to wrap. I have such fun wrapping my presents. I did them all last night with ribbon and everything. I have to admit...they look awesome!

I hope we see each other soon.
